ALF countries

ALF is really a very successful TV show. Although it was produced in the USA only to be aired on NBC, until today ALF was or is still shown in more than 80 countries! Here you can learn more about ALF in 26 countries by now, for which I have more or less detailed information. Thanks to all people which have taken part in the international ALF survey. That's were I got most pieces of information from.

If your country is not in this list, and you know about ALF there, please send me an e-mail. If you discover that there's something wrong in here, please drop me a line, too.
Thank you!

Detailed information is available for the following countries:

1. Argentina

Original Air Date: 1998?

Stations: 11 - TELEFE, Warner Channel, Magic Kids

other ALF series: no information available

Project ALF: no information available

dubbed: no information available

other things: Last year ALF was emited daily in our most important open (not cable) Channel (11 - TELEFE), it was at 6 pm and it was 2 episodies daily. Now we are in summer, and ALF is not yet on an open channel, but we still can see it DAILY at the WARNER CHANNEL, and MAGIC KIDS (2 channels of cable TV for Kids)..

2. Australia

Original Air Date: 1986

Station: Nine Network / Oh!

other ALF series: ALF, not ALF tales

Project ALF: Not aired

dubbed: No

other things: ALF was very successful when it first started, but after a couple of year the ratings dropped and it was taken off the air. 1998 it seemed like sometimes repeats are shown at 4 o'clock in the morning.
ALF is shown again in Australia! It's shown on the Odyssey Channel since the beginning of 2000! Optus Television is cable TV, and costs about 50 Australian Dollars every month, so not too many people subscribed to it, but on Optus ALF is very popular. The channel ALF is on is called Oh!, and in 2001, ALF has been shown on channel 8 (Oh!) at 7pm Monday - Friday, with a repeat of the episode on the next morning at 8pm. That airing stopped May 15, but Optus shows ALF again from the begining, starting on the 11th of June. Now the time is 4pm in the afternoon with a repeat of that afternoon episode at 6am the next morning.
You can read more about this on the special ALF in Australia page.

7. England

OAD: 1987

Station: ITV

Other ALF series: ??

Project ALF: Yes, it has been aired

dubbed: No

Other things: When ALF was on in the 80s the success was quite huge! ALF was shown on ITV, the largest TV station in England besides the BBC. Maybe it was also on Sky1 before it was shown on ITV, but back in that time nearly no one in England had satellite or cable and was able to watch Sky (Pay-TV).
But ALF's success in England was at least so big, that there were official releases of ALF on video, and not only of the original ALF series, but also of the animated series "ALF Tales", both published by a company named "Video Collection International Ltd".
Currently, ALF not on TV anymore (no re-runs, unfortunately), but "Project: ALF" has been shown a couple of times on Channel 5, England's new terrestrial channel, in the last years.

8. Estonia

OAD: 1997

Station: Eastonian Television - E-TV

Other ALF series: Not aired

Project ALF: Not aired

dubbed: subtitled

Other things: All seasons of ALF have been shown. ALF was still aired on Channel 2 (18.00 local time, 5 p.m. CET) the last time I got any information. The ALF ratings in Estonia are pretty good: On Estonian TV it had 100000 viewers, so every 13th(!) person in Estonia watches it. The best programmes have and audience of 300000.

11. Germany

OAD: 1988

Stations: ZDF, Premiere, SAT.1, PRO7, Comedy&Co (DF1), PRO7

other ALF series: ALF, not ALF tales

Project ALF: Yes, it has been aired

dubbed: Yes

other things: In Germany, ALF was first broadcasted in the ZDF ("Second German Television") in 1988 and it became a big success (up to 8 million viewers in West Germany). All 4 seasons were shown until 1991 (excerpt the „Tonight, Tonight“ episodes). Then it was shown on the pay-tv-station Premiere, and after that in 1993, SAT.1 showed the series again in free-tv. Although now it was shown in the early afternoon, the ratings were very high again and nearly always, the share was the highest of the whole day! SAT.1 aired the complete series only one time. At the end of 1993, PRO SIEBEN began to show ALF daily, and on all four seasons were broadcasted again and agian for nearly two years. All in all, the whole series was shown 4 or 5 times without a major loss of viewers! I know no other series which was able to do this. In 1997, ALF was shown on Comedy&Co, which is a part of pay-tv DF1. And since March 1998, ALF is on again on PRO7. In July, all 100 episodes were shown, but they started with the first episode again. So now (October 1998), ALF is still on in Germany at 5.20 p.m. on PRO7. But as it looks like now, our favorite show is going to go off air after the last episode this time.
Since summer 1999, ALF is shown again in Germany on SAT.1 every Saturday at 6.00 p.m.

Update: ALF can be seen on Italian TV again! Since May 2001 ALF is aired from Monday to Friday at 7:00 a.m.! The channel is TMC, which is not a cable tv, neither a satellite channel nor a regional tv. It's national TV station, so everyone in Italy should be able to watch it. But it was over voice so a narrator translates what the cast says, unlike a regular dubbing! So you could still hear what the people say in the background. All those who wanted to get an impression what ALF is like in the english version with polish over voice and who live in europe or near asia with a satellit dish, could watch it on POLSAT, because is broadcasted on the Eutelsat Hotbird satellite.

After that, channel decided for some reasons to show ALF 5 days a week from Monday till Friday (19.30-20.00) And it was 4-th rerun (the last episode was shown in April 29, 1999). Since 1997, ICTV has shown the complete tv series ALF (all four seasons) four times. On June 4th, 1999, the 4th run ended. ALF was on everyday (except Saturday and Sunday) at 5.30 p.m. GMT. ALF is very popular in the Ukraine, the station ICTV got a lot of fan mail and the station got popular because of showing ALF, too. It is said that every third person in the Ukraine is watching ALF.
ALF is back in Ukraine!
Starting Saturday, December 18th 1999, ALF will be shown again in Ukraine! This is already the fifth run of ALF here. It will be aired by ICTV on weekends at 19:55. All 102 episodes will be shown!
"Project: ALF" was shown for the first time on the station "Inter" in 1998, but it was not very successful, because at that time only a few people knew ALF and the dubbing was not very good. The 1999 ICTV airing was much more successful because ALF has become very popular by now and the movie has been re-dubbed.
And ALF is still shown on ICTV in Ukraine! On March 8, 2000, the was even a special ALF day where 18 episodes where shown in a row from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.!

28. USA

OAD: 1986

Station: NBC

other ALF series: both have been aired

Project ALF: Yes, it has been aired

dubbed: No

Other things: In the US, ALF was originally aired on NBC from 1986 until 1990. It was on always Mondays at 8 p.m.
In the US, lots of new comedy series are created every year. There're lot of concepts, the best of them are allowed to tape an pilot episode. And only if the network bosses agree that this is going to be a successful show, the producers get the permission to film the whole season.
So in 1986, Paul Fusco and Tom Patchett had this idea of a tv series about an alien which lives in a typical american family. The concept sounded promising to the network and a pilot was recorded. Because the alien ALF had to have a height of only around 90 cm (around 3 feet), he was played by the midget Michu Meszaros wearing the ALF costume. Producer Paul Fusco was the voice of ALF (only in the english-language version, of course), while the other producer Tom Patchett directed the episode. Well, the network bosses watched it and decided that ALF was going to be a major hit series. As we all know, they have been right. Four seasons have been made of the original series, plus one (or two?) cartoon series. "ALF tales" is about ALF's adventures back then when he lived on Melmac.
Since then, ALF has not been shown that often in the USA. Although the network tv station normally do not re-run their series, the first season had been shown again by NBC in their saturday-morning-cartoon-line-up, before the ALF cartoon series came up. Also, ALF has been re-run in the USA in the syndication which means that local TV stations (a different one in every town) showed it again. But of course each one at a different time (only if the local station did it at all). The cartoon series had been re-run later on the Family Channel, a cable network.
Odyssey Channel shows ALF from Monday to Friday at 5.30 p.m. Eastern/Pacific time and Saturdays on 9.30 a.m.!

29. Venezuela

OAD: 1988

Station: RCTV (Radio Caracas TV-Canal 2)

other ALF series: not aired

Project ALF: Not aired yet

dubbed: Yes (spanish)

Other things: ALF was very popular in Venezuela and it was aired until 1992 aprox. RCTV is an open channel, not a cable channel. By the other hand, ALF can be seen now since The Warner Channel is airing it. Of course, The Warner Channel is a cable channel.

That's it for now.
